Community Activities

Staff Working Group Staff Working Group: HSBC gave staff an opportunity to take personal responsibility for their community and to develop their own CS projects through its Staff Working Group programme. Staff proposed initiatives that would benefit the environment, help educate disadvantaged children or improve livelihoods within their communities. Eleven grass-roots projects targeting different groups thorugh a wide range of activities were selected, and HSBC estimates that over 850 Vietnamese in the local community stand to benefit. For example, one group donated books to two schools and helped them to set up a library; and another group showcased the artistic talents of hearing-impaired and speech-impaired children through a charity exhibition at our banking hall.

 

Typhoon Ketsana Relief Typhoon Ketsana Relief: We donated a total of VND904,512,288 (USD50,000) to help people affected by the Ketsansa storm in Vietnam’s central provinces of Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Kontum, Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue. A total of  VND366,883,488 went directly to the Red Cross in Vietnam to buy food, rice, drinking water containers and other essential supplies for around 120 families in the central region. The remaining VND537,628,800 was given to the Tuoi Tre fund to help rebuild class rooms and dormitories and assist 800 children go back to school. Each child received a package worth VND250,000, which includes school bags and school stationary to the value of VND100,000 and VND150,000 cash for purchasing clothes, shoes and text books.

 

Operation Smile Vietnam Donation Operation Smile Vietnam Donation: HSBC donated USD40,000 and was the silver sponsor for the 20th Operation Smile Anniversary event hold in November. This amount will be used to surgery for Vietnam children with facial deformities in HCMC and Hanoi. We estimated that 250 children will be benefited from this donation.

 

HSBC Charity Futsal League HSBC Charity Futsal League: HSBC invited seven corporate customers to join us in raising funds for Tuoi Tre Newspaper’s Sunflower Foundation, which supports children with cancer. Through this event, HSBC raised and donated nearly VND100m to the foundation, and staff subsequently volunteered to re-paint and decorate the children’s wards at the cancer hospital.

 

Mid-Autumn festival Mid-Autumn festival: Twenty seven HSBC staff celebrated mid-Autumn festival by throwing a big party for 250 students at Thang Long Vocational School. Besides delivering moon cake and lanterns, HSBC also hired a circus team to ensure this mid-Autumn night was full of laughter and fond memories for the children.

 

Offsite meetings Offsite meetings: HSBC gave more staff the opportunity to be involved in volunteering by substituting the traditional offsite team-building outing for a community outreach project. For example:
* Visiting a warm shelter at Can Tho: 120 staff of different teams went to Thiên Ân warm shelter which funded by HSBC Future First. Besides delivering bicycles and gifts, our staff also repainted fences, cleaned the dormitory and played games with the children. Later, children at Thiên Ân warm shelter had a buffet dinner with all HSBC colleagues.
* Other activities: some visited SOS’s village and a home for the elderly; donated heaps of books and clothes to a warm shelter; cleaned the beach…

 

Fun Run Fun Run: HSBC has been gold sponsor for the “Fun Run”, organised by the British Business Group Vietnam (BBGV), for 10 years in a row since its inception. Proceeds from the Fun Run are donated to underprivileged children and children’s charity organisations in and around Ho Chi Minh City. Hundreds of our staff participated alongside customers, relatives and friends in 2009.

 

Blood Donation Blood Donation: On 3 October 2009, 40 HSBC blood donors joined the forth Blood Donation Day organised by the Saigon Times Group and the Vietnam Red Cross chapter in HCMC.

 

Art for Mobility Art for Mobility: HSBC was a silver sponsor two years in a row for Kid’s First Enterprises to organise ‘Art for Mobility’, which raises fund to buy wheelchairs for disabled children in HCMC.

 

RMIT Photo Contest RMIT Photo Contest: HSBC was a gold sponsor for the ‘RMIT Photo Contest’ to raise fund for Loreto, an international charity based in HCMC.
